Hello World

Posted on:August 10, 2023 at 3 min read

I am sorry I couldn’t think of another cliché title for the first article. But most of the adventures in the software industry start with hello world.

Before publishing any articles about my learnings, I want to mention that everything I write in this blog is my view about specific topics, mainly engineering management, software development and personal experiences.

Therefore let me explain my motivation for creating this blog:

Learning

I am a curious person and an avid learner. I like to keep myself updated on the latest technologies and leadership practices. However, I have a memory of fish (like Dori from Finding Nemo). So writing helps me think and comprehend concepts.

Documenting

As I mentioned, my memory is far from one of my strengths. For that reason, documenting my learnings and experiences will allow me to create a journal and a library of references that I can revisit anytime. Also, I will be able to review it in a few years and see how much my perspective on a topic has changed.

Mental modelling

Structuring and writing an idea that lives in our brain so others can understand is exceptionally challenging. Most of the time, when I write something, I struggle. Then, I realise the idea isn’t as clear as I thought. If I can’t explain my thoughts in a simple way that others can understand, then I may not understand them that well. Writing down my learnings helps organise my brain and pushes me to think differently about the topic, eventually making it easier to share with others.

Improve my writing

In most professions, writing is an essential skill to succeed. Since I work in the software industry as an engineering manager, being able to write my thoughts clearly is crucial to do my job. I consider myself a direct writer who gets straight to the point and does not use “fluffy” words. Sometimes, depending on the reader, it can sound unpleasant and aggressive, and it’s something that hopefully I can sweeten.

Another great reason to improve writing is that we are shifting to a remote world where asynchronous communication is the key, so good writing skills are necessary.

Sharing

Last but not least, sharing is caring. Even though the main reason for this blog is to write for me, it is still important to share my learnings. I have learned from others and feel I should contribute to this cycle. If others can learn something valuable from my journey, it makes the endeavour even more satisfying.

Now that I have explained the main reasons why I am starting this blog. I plan to publish one monthly article during the next two years (24 blog posts total). Writing this goal publicly makes it more real and forces me to be consistent (I can’t take back what I have written, #nopressure).

Feel free to follow me on this journey. See you in the following article.
